Garnet is a gemstone that comes in many colors, but is especially known as red. It gets its name from the Latin word for seed, "granatus" - which therefore refers to the seed of the pomegranate.

Birthstone

History

Garnet has been used for decoration for thousands of years and can be traced back to ancient Egypt. The garnet was also frequently worn by royalty in the Middle Ages, where it was believed to have magical powers. Red Garnet was referred to as "karfunkel", which means "little spark".

Gemology

Garnet is particularly known for its red color, but is also found in green, yellow and orange. Its color is determined by the temperatures and elements that affect the gemstone when it is formed underground. Garnet is mined in India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Russia, USA, South Africa and Tanzania. When measuring the hardness of a gemstone, you use the Mohs Hardness Scale. The scale varies from 1-10, where 10 is the hardest - here lies the diamond, which is the hardest gemstone. Garnet is between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
