Garnet is January's birthstone. Wearing one's birthstone is said to bring good luck. You can wear your own birthstone as a lucky charm or your loved one's birthstone as a symbol of love.
Garnet is the gemstone of passion, devotion, sensuality and confidence. Garnet is therefore a genuine power gemstone - both in love and work.
Garnet has been used for decoration for thousands of years and can be traced back to ancient Egypt. The garnet was also frequently worn by royalty in the Middle Ages, where it was believed to have magical powers. Red Garnet was referred to as "karfunkel", which means "little spark".
Many gemstones are associated with a special anniversary. Jewellery with Garnet is given as a gift on the 2nd wedding anniversary.
Garnet is particularly known for its red color, but is also found in green, yellow and orange. Its color is determined by the temperatures and elements that affect the gemstone when it is formed underground. Garnet is mined in India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Russia, USA, South Africa and Tanzania. When measuring the hardness of a gemstone, you use the Mohs Hardness Scale. The scale varies from 1-10, where 10 is the hardest - here lies the diamond, which is the hardest gemstone. Garnet is between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
