Rhodochrosite comes in the most lovely pink colors and has delicate bands of red and white that flutter silky through the gemstone. Its fine name comes from Greek and means "rose colored". An Inca legend tells that the rhodochrosite gemstone was petrified blood of the Inca ancestors. This meant that the gemstone was nicknamed "Inka rose".

Rhodochrosite is known for its rose pink color with red and white bands. Rhodochrosite can also occur in brown and yellow tones. The color of the pink rhodochrosite occurs when the element manganese is present during its formation. This gemstone can be a little fragile and is categorized at 3.5-4 on the Mohs hardness scale. Rhodochrosite can be mined in South Africa, Russia, Sweden, Italy, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and the USA.
