EMERALD'S GEMMOLOGY

Emerald is a Beryl gemstone like Aquamarine and Morganite. It is known for its grass-green color, which it gets from the elements chromium and vanadium when it forms underground. Emerald is a gemstone that often has many inclusions, sometimes in fine patterns. Emerald is mined in Columbia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Russia, Brazil, Pakistan and Afghanistan, among others. When measuring the hardness of a gemstone, you use the Mohs Hardness Scale. The scale varies from 1-10, where 10 is the hardest - here lies the diamond, which is the hardest gemstone. Emerald lies between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
