HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR TURQUOISE JEWELLERY

Turquoise is a completely unique stone that is easy to keep beautiful in your jewellery. Avoid exposing your turquoise jewellery to high heat, as this can cause discolouration and possible damage to the surface of the stone.

When cleaning your turquoise jewellery, use warm water, a mild soap and a soft brush or cloth to clean the stone. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning and steam cleaning on jewellery with turquoise, as this can damage the stone.

Remember that you can always have your Carré jewellery professionally cleaned at your local Carré store.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Turquoise décor can be traced over 4000 years back in time, and the gemstone is found in ancient Egyptian graves. The gorgeous gemstone also has a very special meaning to Native Americans, who made it part of numerous rituals, and rites of passage, and was likewise also worn as a protective talisman.

A Native American legend tells of a terrible drought that made the ancient people dance and cry tears of joy when the rain finally came. Their tears mixed with the rain and the water seeped into the ground and formed the beautiful turquoise gems.

TURQUOISE'S GEMMOLOGY

Turquoise varies in a spectrum of sky-blue, turquoise and blue-green shades. Its color is determined by the temperatures and elements that affect the gemstone when it is formed underground. Turquoise may have markings from the "host stone" in the form of brown or black veins running through the gemstone. These markings are described as "matrix", and can often be seen spun across the gemstone. It is mined in the USA and Iran, among other places. When measuring the hardness of a gemstone, you use the Mohs Hardness Scale. The scale varies from 1-10, where 10 is the hardest - here lies the diamond, which is the hardest gemstone. Turquoise is between 5 and 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
