The aventurine has a long history, with its first documented use over 4000 years ago in China. Here, the gemstone was very popular due to its association with the royals and with the Guanyin Pusa god, who represented love, grace, and healing, which gave the stone the name ‘Yù imperial stone’.
According to folk tales, aventurine has long been regarded as a particularly lucky gemstone. It has even been said that it brings good fortune to buy your lottery ticket with an aventurine in your left pocket.
THE GEMMOLOGY OF AVENTURINE
Aventurine is part of the quartz family and mainly consists of silicon and oxygen. Its colors range from medium to dark green, caused by inclusions of fuchsite in the gemstone. Aventurine displays a metallic sparkling effect, which has been named aventurescence, after the gemstone itself. Along with the rest of the quartz family, Aventurine is rated 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Aventurine can be mined in Brazil, India, Russia, the USA, Japan, Tanzania, and Greenland.
