HISTORICAL MEANING
Lapis Lazuli has throughout history been highly admired and surrounded by mystery.
In ancient Egypt, the blue colour was a symbol of the goddess Isis and was therefore associated with the sky. Lapis Lazuli was used to create artefacts such as amulets and jewellery. The stone was also crushed into powder and used as pigment to paint the eyes blue on statues and coffins. It is said that this protected against the evil eye and ensured that the deceased could be recognised in the afterlife.
The deep, blue colour also made Lapis Lazuli a symbol of royalty and the divine in the Middle Ages and is believed to have given its name to the colour royal blue.

Lapis Lazuli is most often mined in Afghanistan, Chile, Russia, Canada, and Argentina.
