HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR MOONSTONE JEWELLERY

The moonstone is a medium-hard gemstone that measures between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. High temperatures or sudden changes in temperature can cause cracks in the Moonstone. Therefore, it is also only recommended to clean your jewellery set with Moonstone with lukewarm soapy water.

Remember that you can also have your Carré jewellery professionally cleaned at your local Carré.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Back in the day, it was believed that Moonstone could increase a woman’s fertility, and it was thus carried by women, who wanted kids. In some cultures, it was also believed that if one placed Moonstone in their mouth during a full moon, they were able to see into the future.

MOONSTONE GEMMOLOGY

Moonstone is part of the feldspar family and is mainly mined in Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and the United States. Moonstone comes in many color variants such as White, Rainbow, Sand and Gray Moonstone. Its color and internal structure are determined by temperature and elements that affect the gemstone as it forms underground. The moon's internal structure allows it to reflect light in such a way that it looks like a streak of light, a glow of blue or rainbow colors. This optical effect is called adularescence. When measuring the hardness of a gemstone, you use the Mohs Hardness Scale. The scale varies from 1-10, where 10 is the hardest - here lies the diamond, which is the hardest gemstone. Moonstone is 6-6.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
