HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Rhodocrosite was discovered in the ancient Inca Empire in Argentina in the 13th century, but was forgotten after the fall of the Inca Empire. The pink gemstone became popular again in the 1930s when German Franz Mansfeld exhibited Rhodocrosite fragments at the Musée de la Plate in Buenos Aires, and brought them home to The British Museum in London. During another trip to Argentina, he also discovered jewellery with Rhodocrosite in Inca tombs. His passion for this stone led him to create sculptures of Rhodocrosite, which were exhibited at the Leipzig International Fair in 1938. The stone then became very popular and has since been used for decoration and jewellery production.
